Most laundry detergents are made from petroleum, and contain hormone disruptors that don't readily biodegrade.
Try these alternatives instead:

Bleach Alternatives
1/2-cup 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in the rinse cycle.
1/2-cup lemon juice in the rinse cycle.
1/2-cup baking soda in the wash cycle.

Diaper Soak
Pre-soak diapers in warm water with 3-tablespoons baking soda added to remove odors and stains.

Fabric Softener
Adding 1/4-cup baking soda or white vinegar to the wash cycle will soften fabric as well as eliminate static cling.

Moth Repellents
Store clean woolens in sealed plastic bags or airtight containers.
Place garments in the freezer for several days to kill adult moths and larvae.
Combine 2-ounces each dried rosemary and mint, 1-ounce each thyme and ginseng, and 8-ounces of whole cloves. Place in cheesecloth and
tie closed to make moth repellent sachets.

Spray Starch
In a spray bottle, dissolve 2-tablespoons cornstarch in 2-cups of cold water Shake before each use.
Starch delicate fabrics by dissolving 1 package of unflavored gelatin to 2-cups of hot water. Dip a corner of the fabric into the solution to test;
if fabric becomes sticky when dry, add more water.

Stain Removers
Mix equal parts vinegar and water and spot stain.
Use 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, spot clean, and let dry.

Whitener
Add 1/2-cup of baking soda to rinse cycle.
