| Letter to the Editor Guidelines
While we can't expect someone else to "fix" things for us, we can create community by reaching out and sharing our thoughts with others. Listed are guidelines for writing a letter to the Editor. Not all letters to the editor get published due to space limitations, but the more letters a newspaper receives on your issue, the more likely they are to bring your topic to attention. Keep your letter short and focused. Most newspapers have strict length limits. A concise, single-issue letter has a better chance of making an impact. Relate your thoughts from a local, community perspective. Be factual but be interesting. Humor is acceptable. When addressing a previously written article, be timely, write your letter within a day of the article's date. Be sure to make specific references to the article listing its name, author, and the date it was published, and please remember to show respect in your reference; being rude will turn off most readers. Re-read your letter to check for grammar and spelling mistakes. If possible, ask another person to read your letter for accuracy and clarity. Include your contact information. Be sure to include your name, full mailing address, and phone number. Newspapers will not print anonymous letters. |
