Shawn Smith says, "I can't save the whole world, but I want the world to be better because I was here."

Shawn has lived in the Portland area all of her adult life. She owns Ritual Hair Design in Hillsboro and feels strongly that each community member should do what they can to give back to the community in which they live, and that business owners should take the lead.

Shawn practices what she preaches:
She holds an annual beauty-product drive at her salon to help create confidence for the women of Washington County who reside at the Domestic Violence Resource Center and Monika's House.

Her salon participates in "Locks of Love," a service that is turns donated hair it into wigs for children suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatments and other hair loss causes. Hair donors receive a free haircut.

She works on homes for Habitat for Humanity.

She also volunteers as a committee member and a camp counselor for Royal Family Kids' Camp, a camp for abused and neglected children who are in foster care. She has most recently gone through the certification process for adoption of not one, but two of these children.

Shawn doesn't stop there! She encourages her children Brett 15, and Skyler 11, to think with a giving spirit. Brett volunteers as a group leader for middle school students at Sunset Presbyterian Church, and Skyler lead a successful Christmas-time toy donation for Washington County foster children, and she also raised $700 to help prevent malaria in African children through International Medical Teams (formally NW Medical Teams).

Shawn asks, "If everyone does what they can to improve their community and the world, wouldn't we live in a different place? Don't you want to live in that different place?"
