| Walnut Creek, California Dr. Robert Stebbins spent his career as a Professor of Zoology at the University of California at Berkeley; a perfect niche for the boy who loved to get close to any animal, insect, reptile, or bird. He formed a “leave it alone, watch, and study” attitude believing that undisturbed animals, in their natural settings, can provide valuable information. His expertise led him to become an accomplished author and illustrator of more than a dozen books, including Peterson’s Field Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians in which he uses a “species in trouble” warning guide to caution us to the decline of animals not yet recognized as endangered. He believes that creatures are a precursor to what’s in store for humans and that we should pay heed. He cites the witch’s brew of pollution that human activity has created as a factor to environmental chaos. At 93 he is working on a new book. It is designed to reach children and get them reacquainted and interested in nature. His thesis is centered on a whole organism approach to biology. He says, “We are subject to the same laws of nature as are all other organisms; we are related to everything that lives and are but a single strand in the complex web of life, and we are inseparably tied to the earth’s living community. Every person alive today is a unique manifestation of this remarkable unbroken chain, whose ethics extend beyond our own species to the other life of the planet.” Dr. Stebbins deep connection to, concern for, and life-long work regarding the natural world continues to be an inspiration to all. He is a great planetary steward indeed. |
